Custom Vacuum Casting Services

We offer Vacuum Casting services to produce high-precision, complex metal parts with fast lead times, from prototyping to full-scale production.

What is Vacuum Casting?

Vacuum Casting is a rapid prototyping process used to create high-quality parts by casting materials in a vacuum environment. The process begins by creating a master model, typically made from a material like wax or resin. This model is then placed into a vacuum chamber, where liquid material, such as polyurethane or silicone, is poured into the mold. The vacuum removes air bubbles, ensuring a high level of detail and precision in the cast part. Once the material cures, the mold is removed, revealing the final part.

Vacuum Casting is ideal for producing prototypes with excellent surface finishes and intricate details. It offers a cost-effective solution for low-volume production, making it widely used in industries like automotive, electronics, and consumer goods.

What is Vacuum Casting

How Does Vacuum Casting Work?

Pattern Creation

The first step in vacuum casting is to create a pattern or model of the part. This is typically done using a 3D printing technique (such as SLA or FDM) to build a prototype that matches the final product design.

Mold Making

Once the pattern is ready, it is placed inside a mold box. A silicone rubber mold is then created around the pattern by pouring liquid silicone over it. The mold is left to cure and harden, capturing all the fine details of the pattern.

Vacuum Degassing

The silicone mold is placed in a vacuum chamber. The vacuum removes any air bubbles trapped inside the mold, ensuring a flawless surface finish and preventing defects in the final casting.

Pouring the Material

After the mold has been degassed, the desired casting material (such as polyurethane, resin, or other thermoplastics) is poured into the mold. The material is often mixed with hardeners or colorants to achieve the required properties.

Vacuum Casting

The material is then placed back into the vacuum chamber, where the vacuum ensures that any remaining air is eliminated, allowing the liquid material to fill every cavity of the mold. This results in high precision and excellent surface quality.

Curing and Demolding

After the material has cured, the mold is carefully opened, and the cast part is removed. The final part will have high surface detail, dimensional accuracy, and a smooth finish.

Vacuum Casting Solutions

Rapid Prototyping

Vacuum casting is perfect for rapid prototyping, producing up to 50 high-quality parts per mold. Ideal for customized or niche products, it offers flexibility in quantities and specifications without the high costs of traditional methods. This allows for quick design iteration and functional testing.

Low Volume Production

Vacuum casting is also cost-effective for low-volume production, using low-cost tooling to produce small batches of high-quality parts. It’s suitable for functional prototypes and final parts, ensuring precision while keeping production costs low.

Vacuum Casting Tolerances

DescriptionTolerance Notes

Distance Dimensions

+/- 0.010” or +/- 0.003” per inch, whichever is larger, is typical. Irregular or overly-thick geometries may cause deviances or deflection due to shrinkage.

Shrink Mitigation

A shrinkage rate of +0.15% can be expected due to thermal expansion of the liquid, and the response of the flexible mold.

Surface Quality

Surface finish is externally smoothed to a satin or matte surface. Grow lines may be present on internal or difficult-to-access features. Polishing or custom finishes must be clearly defined and agreed upon at the point of order.

Feature Definition

Sharp corners and text may appear slightly rounded.

Size Recommendation

We can offer urethane cast parts as large as 30” (0.762 m) long.
