What is CNC Machining?

CNC machining is a highly advanced and precise manufacturing process used to create custom parts and components.

In CNC machining, a computer-controlled machine utilizes rotating cutting tools to remove material from a workpiece, which is securely clamped to the machine’s work surface. The machine follows a programmed set of instructions from CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software, enabling it to perform various operations such as milling, turning, drilling, and grinding.

With the ability to automate production, reduce human error, and ensure consistency, CNC machining provides both high precision and cost-effectiveness when producing prototypes and high-volume production parts.

What is CNC milling

Advantages of CNC Machining

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a widely used manufacturing process that offers numerous benefits over traditional methods. Here are the key advantages of CNC machining:

Precision and Accuracy

CNC machines can produce parts with extremely tight tolerances, ensuring consistency across multiple production runs. The computer control allows for high precision which is difficult to achieve manually.

Repeatability

Once a CNC program is created and tested, it can be used to produce identical parts time after time, which is crucial for manufacturing processes requiring multiple copies of the same component.

Complex Shapes and Designs

CNC machines can create complex shapes and intricate designs that would be challenging or impossible to make by hand. This capability opens up new possibilities in customization product design.

Digital Integration

CNC systems can be easily integrated into automated manufacturing environments. They can communicate with other machines and systems through networking capabilities, allowing for streamlined production workflows.

Material Versatility

Wide Range of Materials: CNC machines can work with almost any material, from metals like steel, aluminum, and titanium to plastics, wood, and composites.

Cost-Effectiveness

Although initial setup costs can be high, CNC machining can be more cost-effective for medium to high-volume production due to reduced labor, increased efficiency, and material optimization.

Applications of CNC Machining

Rapid Tooling

By utilizing CNC technology, we can efficiently produce precise tooling components from virtually any material, enabling faster prototyping and production cycles.

Rapid Prototyping

CNC machining offers a cost-effective, fast, and versatile solution for rapid prototyping. With its wide range of materials available, it enables the quick production of high-precision prototypes.

End-Use Production

With precise tolerances, a wide variety of materials, and excellent surface finishes, CNC technology ensures reliable performance and consistency for final products across various industries.

CNC Machining Metals and Plastics

There is a wide variety of CNC machining materials available for milling. Typically, the most used are metals, plastics, and special materials.

plastics cnc machining

Plastics

Plastic materials are commonly utilized in CNC machining due to their ease of machinability and versatile properties. Common plastics include ABS, acrylic, polycarbonate (PC), PVC, nylon, POM (Delrin), polyethylene (PE), and Teflon, etc.

metals cnc machining

Metals

Common metals used in CNC machining include aluminum, stainless steel, and brass, which offer excellent machinability and structural integrity. Other metals suitable for machining include copper, bronze, magnesium, titanium, zinc, etc.

CNC Machining Tolerances and Standards

We follow the tolerance standards of ISO 2768 (medium grade, fine grade) and ISO 286 (grades 8, 7, 6). You are welcome to emphasize it in the drawings or communicate with the sales for higher precision needs. We follow ISO2768m by default in the absence of special requirements.
