E-Coating Services

Our electrophoretic coating solutions ensure uniform coverage, enhanced durability, and an attractive appearance—perfect for demanding industrial, automotive, and consumer applications.

What is E-coating?

E-coating is an electrochemical finishing process used to apply a uniform, protective coating to metal parts. Also known as electrophoretic coating or electrocoating, the process involves immersing the metal component in a water-based paint solution and applying a direct electrical current. This causes the paint particles to migrate and bond to the surface, forming a smooth, consistent film that adheres even to hard-to-reach areas.

E-coating delivers excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and coverage, making it ideal for complex metal parts in demanding environments. It is commonly used in the automotive, appliance, and industrial equipment industries. The process is environmentally friendly, with low VOC emissions, and can serve as a standalone finish or a base layer for powder coating or topcoats.

Advantages of E-coating

E-coating offers a range of significant advantages that make it a preferred finishing method across various industries. One of its key benefits is the ability to provide uniform coverage, even on complex shapes, sharp edges, and recessed areas—ensuring consistent protection across the entire part.

Uniform Coverage

Provides consistent film thickness, even on complex geometries, edges, and recesses.

Superior Corrosion Resistance

Forms a durable barrier against moisture and chemicals, extending part's lifespan.

Excellent Adhesion

Strong bonding to the metal surface, enhancing the durability of subsequent topcoats.

Environmentally Friendly

Water-based process with low VOC emissions and minimal hazardous waste.

Cost-Effective

Highly automated and efficient, reducing labor and material waste, for Mass Production

Versatile Applications

Suitable for steel, aluminum, and other conductive metals across many industries.

Types of E-Coating Coatings and Materials

Type of E-Coating Base Material Resin System Color Options Key Features Typical Applications
Cathodic Epoxy E-Coat Steel, Iron, Zinc-coated Steel Epoxy Black (most common) Excellent corrosion resistance, good adhesion, low UV stability Automotive chassis, underbody, appliances
Cathodic Acrylic E-Coat Steel, Aluminum, Zinc alloys Acrylic Wide color range UV resistant, good exterior durability, moderate corrosion resistance Exterior automotive parts, decorative metal
Anodic Epoxy E-Coat Steel, Aluminum Epoxy Limited (black/gray) Good corrosion protection, lower performance than cathodic types Office furniture, hardware, electrical enclosures
Anodic Acrylic E-Coat Steel, Aluminum Acrylic Moderate color range Better UV resistance than anodic epoxy, fair corrosion resistance Lighting fixtures, consumer electronics
Hybrid E-Coat Steel, Aluminum Epoxy-Acrylic blends Customizable Balanced corrosion and UV resistance, versatile General metal finishing, industrial parts
Zinc-rich E-Coat Primer Steel Zinc-infused epoxy Gray Superior galvanic corrosion protection, primer layer Heavy equipment, marine, structural steel

Design Considerations for E-Coating

Part Geometry

Complex part shapes with deep recesses, tight corners, or enclosed cavities may pose challenges for consistent coating thickness and drainage.

Drainage and Ventilation

Proper drainage and airflow are crucial for avoiding defects such as pooling, streaking, or incomplete curing.

Coating Thickness Requirements

If a specific film thickness is required, designers should communicate this with the E-coat provider. Generally, thickness can range from 15 to 35 microns, depending on the material and application.

Material Compatibility with Cure Temperature

E-coated parts typically undergo thermal curing at temperatures between 150–200°C (300–390°F). Designers must ensure that all materials, welds, or inserts can tolerate this heat without deformation or loss of mechanical properties.
